　　尼克（约翰·库萨克 John Cusack 饰）是一位空中雷达管束员，他的工作就是批示和监控机场内的数千架飞机腾飞下降。对于这份义务严重的工作，尼克酷爱而且非常擅长，他仔细谨慎的工作风格让他在公司内饱受好评。
　　一个名叫罗素（比利·鲍伯·松顿 Billy Bob Thornton 饰）的汉子的出现终结了尼克安静的生活，他不但在工作成就上超越了罗素，甚至就连体态和边幅都要更胜罗素一筹。糟糕的不但仅于此，当尼克和罗素的妻子玛丽（安吉丽娜·朱莉 Angelina Jolie 饰）的暗昧关系被罗素知晓后，后者以及其冷静和稳重的态度狠狠给了尼克一个下马威。面临如此微弱的仇敌，尼克会做出怎样的行为呢？
