　　小男孩杰米（Stephen Archibald 饰）在爱丁堡郊区一个贫苦的矿区长大，他生活在一个物资和感情极端匮乏的家庭里，童年布满着疾苦的回忆。杰米的母亲被送进精神医院，祖怙恃都很刻毒，他日突变得阴霾和狂野。终极他经过应招国家办事机构，结识好友罗伯特——一个年轻中产阶级英国人。渐渐地，男孩遭到艺术的感化，而这拯救了他的平生。罗伯特先容新书给杰米，与罗伯特的友谊，杰米变得悲观，同时他也重新修建了未来的期望。
　　比尔·道格拉斯的三部曲（《我的童年》、《亲人们》、《回家的路》）详述一个年轻男孩的长大履历。这三部影片中变现的粗暴情感是惊人的。机位及拍摄手法明显遭到杜辅仁科、费穆及小津安二郎的影响。道格拉斯的自传体影片曾三次获得柏林电影节大奖、并曾获威尼斯银狮奖、英国作家协会奖及萨瑟兰郡奖。英格兰埃克赛特大学甚至设立了比尔·道格拉斯研讨中心，虽然他平生只拍摄了四部影片。他的自传体三部曲是关于感动、息争及回归的名作。
